To begin our class we had Kristen from Science Venture. This is a STEM outreach program for grades 1-12. This program is through UVic and is run fully by UVic students, as well as different high school students from around the district. The different programming streams such as: general coding, inSTEM, etc. I liked that Kristen came in and provided us with this possible learning ability, especially being in the education program, as they can benefit from different learning and teaching opportunities. I attached their website here!

Next in class, we focused our conversation and learning around AI (artificial intelligence), Chat GTP, etc. As we all know and are probably scared of, AI is quickly advancing daily throughout our world.

Chat GTP has picked up greatly in the last couple of years for its ability to generate anything, pictures, writing, etc within split seconds. You could ask this platform to do anything from create a cover letter, write a story, analyze an article, come up with lyrics, and so so so much more.

We tried it out for ourselves by asking the question: “Why is my education teaching asking me to blog” It provided 12 different points with an explanation to back the points up. Chat GTP also does a great job of providing the article or source references and links.

I then took to Chat GTP to ask my question: “Make a rap song about kidney stones and the importance of hydration” This was the rap song that was created for me instantly:

“(Verse 1) Yo, let me drop some knowledge ’bout a painful condition, Kidney stones, they ain’t no joke, it’s a tough mission, Tiny crystals formed in your kidney’s filtration, Causing pain, you’ll be wishing for hydration.

Drink up, my friend, that’s the key, Keep your body flowing like a rolling sea, Water’s the answer, it’s your best friend, Prevent those stones, let the message extend.

(Chorus) Hydration, hydration, don’t delay, Keep the kidney stones at bay, Water’s the potion, it’s the cure, Stay hydrated, that’s for sure.

(Verse 2) Kidney stones, they’re like rocks inside your kidney, Sharp and painful, make you feel kinda iffy, But don’t worry, you can beat this strife, With H2O, the elixir of life.

Eight cups a day, that’s the golden rule, Flush those stones out, don’t be a fool, Sippin’ on water, keepin’ your flow clean, Say goodbye to kidney stones, live the dream.

(Chorus) Hydration, hydration, don’t delay, Keep the kidney stones at bay, Water’s the potion, it’s the cure, Stay hydrated, that’s for sure.

(Verse 3) Dehydration’s the enemy, it’s the trigger, For those stones to form and make you shiver, So grab a glass, raise it up high, To a stone-free life, let’s say goodbye.

No more suffering, no more pain, Hydration’s the answer, the name of the game, So spread the word, let the message resound, Stay hydrated, stay healthy, let’s all get down.

(Chorus) Hydration, hydration, don’t delay, Keep the kidney stones at bay, Water’s the potion, it’s the cure, Stay hydrated, that’s for sure.

So remember, my friends, hydration’s the key, To keep those kidney stones far away, you see, Drink that water, keep your body in check, No more kidney stone pain, no more wreck.”

The main importance that I have seen and can take out of Chat GTP that is it can create a huge difficulty of plagiarism if not used properly. This can be super useful if used properly, for example, teachers or student teachers like myself can use it to come up with useful points for lesson plans, different activities for certain grades, etc. However, this should be used for ideas only, rather than a literal copy and paste. I liked this lesson a lot being able to test out different prompts, etc!
